Plundered Booty started as a short story. I went to a workshop out in Arizona and at night all of us writers sat around swapping takes. The editor who put the workshop together noted that when I was telling a story verbally I sued different words, pacing, and tone than I seemed to on the page. He challenged me to go home and write a story in the same manner as i would tell one sitting on a barstool.

I thought about it on the plane ride home and even began jotting a few things down in a notebook. I thought up the character of Hank, who is probably a composite of myself as well as a slew of other so-called "good ol' boys."

To do what the editor suggested I knew I'd have to tell the story in first person. With that thought in mind I began the first line, My story is one that should not be told. Then I began trying to figure out exactly what that story was and over time through trial and error I uncovered a pirate story with a reluctant protagonist and a daring pirate that no one ever would have expected to plunder any booty.Travis Erwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09420879160702098979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9174721864572618040.post-12879160464797300712009-04-09T18:54:00.000-05:002009-04-09T18:54:00.000-05:00This wasn't boring at all! I like reading about how other people do it, especially since your method seems kind of similar to mine (which really isn't a method at all).

I recently did a character exercise for a subplot I had to add and you're right - it makes the actual writing so much easier.Melanie Hooyengahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08781235493983907234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9174721864572618040.post-83814422002421760892009-04-09T18:13:00.000-05:002009-04-09T18:13:00.000-05:00I don't find it boring at all.
