Keith looked around furtively before entering the long line of parents and sticky, misbehaving children. He wished he'd have brought his nephew along as a reason to approach Santa.

Dr. Langstrom had told Keith that this wasn't a natural fantasy, and that he couldn't keep doing this. He knew as the line progressed and each child in front of him had their turn on Santa's lap that he should walk away. And yet... he was powerless.

At last it was his turn to walk across the polyester-snow covered stage to Santa. Their eyes met. Keith didn't see the puzzled expression on Santa's face. All he saw was the invitation to sit on his lap...

BTW, I couldn't enlarge the pic. :(

Charles - Very poetic. Thanks for jumping right in.

Monnik - Great detail, You made me laugh. At one time I knew how to post a picture where a person could click it to enlarge. Apparently I've forgotten, so this is as god as it gets.

To me it is beautiful. How is Santa to shame a man from his time to shine. Santa did not become a Saint for begrudging a man with a child-like love. Who knows maybe the world would be a brighter place if we all went and sat on Santa's lap. Tis the season to be Jolly.

Okay, Travis, you asked for it:

I’ve finally done it! Nearly forty years and countless dollars in my therapists’ pocket, but I’ve finally beaten my fear of the fat man.

Other children on my block were afraid of clowns which didn’t seem nearly so devastating. Who really minded being shut out of cheesy balloon animals? But not me, that red suit, big black boots, the beard that most sinisterly covered what must be the coldest of souls... trees with pretty baubles made me tremble with the thought that this nefarious beast would soon slither in through our chimney under the ruse of leaving presents... I wasn’t fooled. I spent my boyhood plotting a course to keep my naïve family safe, though the bear trap in the fireplace accidentally caught dear old pappy and I was sent to reform school for the duration, still I knew it was the fat man who was to blame.

Adulthood didn’t cure the malady of santaphobia, a term my first therapist coined and then made a fortune off of on the lecture circuit. I was able to avoid him, mostly, staying clear of shopping centers and turning off the television from Halloween through New Years... there was the one with the bell and bucket in front of the piggly wiggly, smelling of scotch and taunting me with his eyes – but that truck was going far too fast and no one really saw me nudge him clear enough for the charges to stick.

But then, with my own children, the fear grew at a rapid pace and my wife would not abide leaving Santa out if the equation in favor of the present toting squirrel... Squirrels are not nearly so imposing and they never wear boots...

But now I’ve finally made it. Faced me fear and sat down on his lap. I can even smile, knowing I’ve beaten him, heh, and that he doesn’t know what I’ve put in his eggnog.

Anon - Child-like is a apt descript for the man on Santa's lap.

Merry- Wow, that is a complete story in short time. Love the ending.

angel - Why yes it does, just look at the youthful gleam in that Santa's eyes.

Bernita- Trains? He prefers working model airplanes. But not a bad guess.

No one has pointed out an important fact yet.

"I saw daddy kissing Santa Claus,
underneath the mistletoe last night.
And I saw daddy tickle Santa Claus,
underneath his beard so snowy white!
Oh what a laugh it would have been
if Mommy had only seen,
Daddy kissing Santa Clause last night!"

Fish- that is a birdhouse. I don't know why it is so shiny in the pic.

Ello- Cute, but I don't think that Santa would have gone for it.

I know I'm late on the comment (behind on the blogroll) but I'll guess it's you dressed up as Santa and your old man sitting in your lap?

Now, I'll have to patiently wait while I see what the real situation was...
