I'm Still Alive

I've did it again. I had promised myself that I would never write two, book-length projects at the same time and here am doing that very thing. I'm also critiquing two projects for friends. That along with my regular life duties means my blogging will be sporadic for a while.

Several of you have asked so thought I'd give you a brief update on the flag football. At this point it is obvious the kids have the talent and ability to win but sadly poor coaching seems to be holding them back. If you are new here, I might should point out that I am the coach. Along with my buddy Charlies that is. He does the defense, I do the offense.

Here we are rallying the troops at halftime.

The team is o-5 but we've been close in every game and lost 19-20 right at the end of one game. I think the boys are having fun and I know they have learned a lot as they line up and run the plays with very little explanation needed.

Last game all was going well and we were moving the ball then our running back fell and lost a tooth. Lost as in it fell out and we could not find it among the grass. Amid concerns of the tooth fairy having no price to cart off and the rest of the team wondering if it hurt to lose a tooth playing football the focus drifted away from the gridiron and I as coach never could get it back.

We have three games left, including two this weekend. I'll be kind of sad when the season is over, but a bit thankful for the extra time nonetheless. It has been fun however as few things feel better than being part of a team and having their youthful exuberance rub off on me.

Since we are a Catholic School team, maybe we should simply run a Hail Mary pass every play and hope or divine intervention.

I don't know how you do it Coach. Coaching young boys would drive me mad. Thank goodness I don't have to do it.

LMAO @ the loss of a tooth and the worries over the tooth fairy.

I hope you can squeeze time here and there. :)

Which is more challenging: coaching da boys or writing 2 booklength projects and blooging at the same time?

Well goodness, you've a lot going on. I hope you're able to enjoy the busyness and also be able to progress with your own stuff. Good luck!

Aren't the goals for kids this age just to have fun and learn some of the rules of the game? Sounds as if you're doing fine in both departments, Coach.

wow, sounds like you are extremely busy. Good luck with your last few games. I think some Hail Mary's might help, prayers and passes.

Once my son ate a loose tooth while chowing down on pancakes.

And, you know, we never did look for that tooth. I think the tooth fairy was just as happy we left a note instead of waiting for it to emerge

BWHAHAHAHAH! "Hail Mary Pass"

I think it's great that you're coaching! You're gonna look back on these days and smile.

My fingers are crossed on the last few games and take a break bloggin'. You certainly deserve it.

Hang in there, coach. It's probably an adjustment for everyone.
I know what you mean about losing time for the blogosphere, as well. I'm about to bust hump like never before in advance of this year's holiday art market circuit.

I keep tellin' ya Travis bring them to Detroit and have them play the Lions. It's a guaranteed win against a team with a worse record.

I think it rocks that you coach! It's okay to have a rough rookie year (or two or three...). LOL on the tooth. I can see why that was majorly distracting...and still sweet to know rough & tumble football boys still believe in the tooth fairy.

Good luck on your writing.

I for one am distracted by the "Aloha from Waikiki" comment. I bet you could throw a hail mary pass from Hawaii, couldn't you?

TE: I'm trying to click on "Follow" this blog - but for some reason cannot. Glitches?

As soon as school's over in Dec.(assuming I graduate - big asumption!) - I'll join you in the more-than-one-writing-project-going-at-once-hell.

Of course, I won't be blogging any more come Jan. and I don't coach kids either, so guess I should not complain.

I'm laughing over the tooth. At first, I thought you meant he lost it in from being tackled.

You make me feel so lazy!

And I think you should tape a few games and post them. Especially if you try the Hail Mary thing.

Travis,

Now I feel bad, adding to your already overfull schedule... maybe I should've been reading your blog more regularly before asking you to beta:-)

Next time a kid loses a tooth on the field, tell him the tooth fairy gives extra money for teeth lost for the good of a team:-) THough, then you'd have all the kids trying to knock their teeth out...

My son's team is currently 0 and I think 10, so don't feel so bad. They redid the leagues this year and we wound up playing our 50-65 pound kids against kids that are 80-90 pound, one team had a striper (which means he's not allowed to tackle, but still) who was 140 pounds... hello!!! my kid lines up against the defensive line and the top of his helmet doesn't even hit their chest protectors... it's brutal to watch... but I can't tell you how thrilled he is when he actually knocks one of those kids down...

Nice sport that is...

One of my kids lost a tooth they'd lost too. I bet you didn't know that the tooth fairy knows all and all you have to do is leave a little note that explains the situation. That's such a great story though.

My husband coached for years and years. The absolute best memory is that we had a tradition of all the spectators (parents, grandparents, etc.) lining up on the sideline after each game to give the kids a high-five and a word of encouragement (win of lose). At the same time, the kids went down the line thanking us for coming to the game and supporting them. What a great life lesson! ~Karen
