Family Fun -- A My Town Monday Post

Halloween is a big event around my house. My wife collects Department 56 Halloween village pieces, my oldest son's birthday is October 31st, and then there is the candy for me and my youngest. We both have a serious sweet tooth.

So having said all of that. We, as a family enjoy anything Halloweenish we can do together and The Amazingly Fun Farm just to the southeast of Amarillo fits that bill.

The above shot is of my boys playing king of the hay. but of course the farm's main attraction is an eight acre corn maize. This year's pattern is reflective of the upcoming election.

The farm also has a pick your own pumpkin and gourd patch, a pneumatic corn cannon, a hayride, and other assorted activities.

But instead of describing everything let me show you pictures. We arrived late afternoon, but by the time we got to the maze dark had set in and let me tell you it's pitch black in their among the 8 foot corn stalks. I enjoyed scaring the boys as well as Jennifer at nearly every turn.

I have more pictures an a video of the corn cannon in action that I will try to load tomorrow, but blogger is giving me fits right now and it has taken all afternoon and evening to get this many pics up. (UPDATE -- Corn cannon and more pics have been added to the very bottom of this post) I really like this last shot. As I said it was pitch black except for when the flash of my camera went off. If you notice in the upper right of this picture there is some kind of flying critter that I caught mid flight. (You can click to enlarge if need be.)

Of course me being the storyteller that I am I had the boys convinced it was some kind of fairy that lives in corn patches, but as always Jennifer called bullshit and convinced them it was just a bug.

She never lets me have any fun.

And please don't forget to visit my giving page on DonorChoose.org to help kids in public schools fall in love with books and reading.

My girls, now 20 and almost 17, remember our visit to the corn maze well. We were there for a very long time---thirst and hunger took over, and they asked, "Are we done having fun yet, Mommy?"
My post is up.

Oh how I love Fall!! Nothing better than that crisp fall air. The smell of harvest, and cool looking pumpkins.

We're big halloweeners too. My husband and I shared our first kiss on halloween... oh the memories! We still dress up every year and have a huge party. Wanna come?

Halloween just flat out rocks...and I absolutely love the fairy you caught on "film." No wonder, really, as the veil is thinnest this time of year. ;)
I found a corn maze not far from our area, too. May have to check that out...

I've got my post up, Travis.

I love corn mazes. Only, I love 'em in the daytime b/c I'm a scaredy Clair.

Hi Travis,

My MTM post is scheduled to go up around 5 AM ET Monday.

Autumn is my favorite season and I love Halloween. I spent part of the weekend visiting a State that shall remain nameless where I campaigned for a candidate who shall remain nameless. I was just the slowest canvasser ever, because I kept stopping to admire all the Halloween decorations. People are so creative. I love Halloween!

Man, I remember playing king of the hay with my nephews in the barn. So much fun. Thanks for bringing back that memory.

I love pumpkins, we just don't do halloween like you lot do, although I am a one woman crusader trying to do my bit. We always have pumpkins and dress up.

My post is up.

I have actually been lost in a corn maze. And it was scary. My post is up, BTW.

So uhhh Travis were you constantly using the flash on the camera to illuminate the way through the maze?

That corn maze looks so cool! We don't really have fall in Florida. We have had a lot of rain, though.

It doesn't look like fall from my perspective. We're in coats already here. When did Halloween become such a big holiday I wonder.

What fun! We went an picked apples this week-end and were remembering the fun our boys used to have this time of year.

Halloween is the best! And I love that ambitiously artistic maze, as well as the equally artsy photo.

That maze is, well, amazing. And that IS a fairy flying nearby! Great memories the kidlets will always carry. Kudos for good parenting.

PS...You've been randomly tagged at my blog. ;)

That maze beats all.

What a cool place to take (and scare) your kids.

We had cornfields right next to my house when I was growing up - there's something very eery about a cornfield at night!

We go to one of those fall farm places each year too. The corn maze is so much fun. (Love the one your farm did - that's so cool!)

The shot with the bug in it is amazing. Very cool!

Looks like a fun time!

I like the maze, and the other photos, too. Halloween brings a nice close to the autumn before winter sets in (here in Ontario it does). Family outings are great.

My post is up after the trials of blogger. Clicking the refresh button helps.

Corn mazes are fun - unless you get lost!

That looks like so much fun! I've never been in a corn maze, unless you count chasing a field hockey ball during a game right next to a corn field.

The Simpsons episode where Homer gets lost in the corn maze was just on last week.

Awesome pictures there big guy.

Almost makes me want to explore the few that are here in CT.

Thanks for the field trip, it was a refreshing change of pace.

Corn mazes - another reason fall is so much fun.

Cute pics... the shirt your son had on was very appropriate for King of the Hay.

Hey! GMTA! I took our boys to one this w/end too and blogged about it! LOL! Our maze was over 25 acres. I think that looks like a corn maze fairy to me Travis. I saw a lot of those this w/end. Tell Jennifer to stop being a spoilsport. ;)

That maze is truly stunning! I'm a native Texan, albeit quite a bit further south than your location, and I've never seen such a cool farm.

So ya'll celebrate Halloween all month long?

That corn maze looks scary . . . with my poor sense of direction I'd be stuck in there until someone else wandered in and rescued me.

My "My Town" post is up today.

WOW! The corn maze here can't even being to compare to that one! How long does it take to get through?

We carved big pumpkins a few weeks ago, but, since it was still so hot, they were rotted after about a week. I need to go get some more before all the big ones are gone.

I didn't know about The Amazingly Fun Farm! How did I miss that, having lived here all these years? Is it something new?

My kids are grown but Halloween is still my favorite holiday. My little neice and nephew are going to be in town this weekend. I'm taking them out there! Thanks for the post and the great pics!
