My Town Map

It's been a while since I started My Town Monday and I have a lot of new readers so it seems like a good time to rehash my original thoughts on the weekly project. My goal was to eventually have at least one participant from all fifty states and as many other countries as possible. This map gives you a good idea of where I stand on that goal.

The gist of My Town Mondays is for bloggers to talk about any town they know something interesting about. It could be their current home, the place they grew up, or simply a location you've visited and learned a cool bit of knowledge of. At the bottom you of this post you can click on the My Town Monday tag and see my older posts as well as each week's links to the other participants. Or here is a link to my original post describing My Town Monday.

The only so-called rule is that if you decide to participate please leave a comment and let me know so that I can link to you.

While I am catching up I thought I'd post some pictures I promised a while back when I blogged about Amarillo's title of Helium Capitol of the world. To read that post click here.

Anyway here are the pictures of the National Helium monument. Hold your breath, they are exciting.

You might have to click on that middle picture to read the words but the monument also serves as a time capsule. And it's a sun dial as well. It's sits outside the Don Harrington Discovery Center which is place my entire family love.

Here is the Discovery Centers Mission statement which I lifted straight from their website.

The mission of the Don Harrington Discovery Center (DHDC) is:

"To build knowledge and understanding of science and its impact on our lives, our community, and our world. We are dedicated to fostering curiosity, wonder, and the skills of minds and will that fuel the human imagination to probe mysteries beyond the limits of the known."

DHDC has been a provider of science and health educational programming and hands-on science experimentation since 1985. Because DHDC is the only science center serving a vast geographic area cover three states (Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma Panhandle, and Eastern New Mexico), we offer the unique ability to make a positive impact on a large constituency composed of persons from widely different ethnic and racial backgrounds.

I recommend you check out the monument and the Discovery center if you ever visit Amarillo or live near by.

I may do more posts in the future so I'll definitely let you know. And it's good to know we're not limited to where we've lived - I may have to look at some travel pics and see what I have to share. :)

Now why did I read that thinking of you with a very high - pitched voice? Heh. Helium can be fun but we don't do it anymore because I don't want to teach my kids to be huffers. :)

Dude,
You have far surpassed your original thoughts about what my town Monday would be.
Excellent idea and you have many of them which is kudos to you.
But remember Qatar and Israel on your map.
You know, I think this blogging thing works for you.

Travis, I've enjoyed all the MTM posts, and I appreciate you allowing me to be a part of it. I'll have another Boh Cyprain post from Cameroon up tonight.

Unfortunately the map won't load for me. My computer sucks butt.
The helium monument is really cool! I love the idea of the time capsule. That discovery center looks really cool, too. I'm a science nut, though. Perhaps that also explains why I used to play D&D heavily & I can quote all kinds of Monty Python at the drop of a hat...

Thanks to you Travis, my writing abilities have improved. It's been very interesting reading about other people's places.

I am unable to get the map, my internet security is blocking it.

My post for MTM is up.

Helium Monument ha that's awesome!

I see you don't have Indiana, I could help if my town weren't so freaking boring haha :)

Huskers ALMOST pulled it out I was rooting for them because it would have made me look smart for picking them

Travis, it is so great that you started this! I love to learn about the different places each week and to find things about my own city to share with everyone else.

The time capsule/monument is very cool!

Mine is up.

MTM is a wonderful and successful idea Travis - well done! :}

Except for the map that appears as a blob of snow-covered tundra somewhere by the North Pole, I enjoy reading your MTMs. Recovered from the run yet?

My post is up, Travis. I'll be back later to read.

I apologize for the tardiness is getting links posted, but have been having internet woes at my house.

That is freaking cool that it's also a sun dial! I don't know why that fascinates me so much, but it does!

wow - Travis! Look how many MTM posts you've gotten around the world! That's so cool!!

One of these days, I'm really going to write a MTM post. My town is just, extremely small, and pretty boring. But my hometown isn't, so maybe I'll write about it someday.

Hey Travis! I've missed alot I see! But what an awesome map! These posts have been great and you should be proud! But now I've got alot of catch up to do in the next few weeks, hopefully, whenever I have downtime!!

Hi Travis, I saw your comment and realized that it was Monday. So I figured what the heck, I'll give My Town Monday a try.

I read from NC. I am trying to get info about my small community that I live in currently. I have only lived here since April.

You should be very proud of your accomplishments!

Thanks for adding me to MTM! I've reciprocated. In this case you need to change "Abita Springs" to "Mandeville," however. ;)

What an interesting idea! I've visited several of these blogs that have a "My Town Monday" and always love reading them, but didn't realize that it was your Brain Child. Someone already does my town (Chicago), but maybe sometime I'll try doing one from where I grew up (Indiana)...I'll let you know.

I especially love your idea of hitting all the 50 states and several other countries.

This is such a cool idea!! I see you don't have anyone from Alabama...I'm doing another project this week on my blog, but perhaps I could try it next week?

This is really fun.I love to "armchair" travel (as well as "really" travel! LOL), so this right up my alley!

Karen Fisher-Alaniz said...

Very interesting. So why does your voice get funny when you inhale it? That's my scientific question of the day...lol.

My town is really beautiful in the fall. I plan to grab my camera one day this week and snap some pics so I can join you Mondays. Great idea-love it! ~Karen

Aloha Texan ;-)
I write about my town too!
'Walking in Waikiki with Cloudia' is published every other week at www.waikikinews.com
and I blog daily under the palms at www.comfortspiral.blogspot.com.

I like "My Town" and will visit often. Wanna link?
Best Wishes!

I think I know why, but I'd still like to know the answer to Karen's question.

I can't get the damn map to load either, but it rocks that you have so many places covered!

Hmmm....No one from Arkansas! I'll have to fix that next Monday, if I get the chance. I've got a busy week-end and may not get it done in time, but I will do a Hometown Monday and it will feature the Bentonville/Bella Vista, Arkansas area so that you can add one more state to the list.

Sorry I missed last week. I had a bad week. I have ideas for the next two weeks, so will try to get them pre-written in case I have another bad week. (You never know when one might pop up!)

Just to provide some info, Travis, Canada is made up on 10 provinces and 3 territories. It would be fun if your map showed the particular province or territory we represent!
