Cockamamie

I say ... I say ... I say I'm thoroughly ticked off. And no son, that is no joke.

Let me set the scene. There I was, roaming around the book and video section of Target while my wife was off looking at God knows what. I was trying to amuse myself, and ease the pain of being drug against my will out for an afternoon of shopping.

And then I spied this.

One look and I tossed that little collection into my basket. Now I could lie and tell y'all the same things I did my wife. I could say I purchased the Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection 2 because i thought my boys would like it. I could even speak the truth and say the cartoons are a lot better and less annoying than ever-so-popular yellow and porous square fellow, or that motley crew on Chowder, but I'm going to come clean and tell you why I bought that collection.

Me and Foghorn J. Leghorn go way back. He's my all-time favorite character and if you take a look at that DVD cover you'll see every one's favorite giant cock (that phrase ought to generate some interesting Google searches) right there in the lower right hand corner. Heck, the diminutive Henery the Chicken Hawk is right there above him.

Now it's been years since I've had the pleasure of Foghorn's company or heard a single southern fried ... I say Son.

Oh but the charm of that collection didn't end there. Another of my Saturday morning faves was the odorous and amorous, Pepé Le Pew.

And there is also a picture of Speedy Gonzales. I'd about assumed he'd been banned from the airwaves out of politic correctness for portraying racial stereotypes. Speedy isn't one of the greats, but I hadn't seen in a good long while so I was eager to hear a good "¡Ándale! ¡Ándale! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba!".

Needless to say it was I who was excited to slip the DVD into the player.

But guess what. Not one damn Foghorn cartoon, or Pepé, or Speedy is to be found in the whole shootin' match of cartoons.

I say ... I say .... I say that is blatant false advertising and gives new meaning to the term cock tease.

Well I'm no tease, so here is dose of what those characters over at Warner Bros. screwed me out of.

So tell me, Who is your all-time favorite cartoon character?

I say son.. that just SUCKS! Why couldn't they just throw him in there a coupla times? No Pepé either? OR Speedy? Damn! I would be getting my money back. Aside from Pepé and sppedy.. I LOVE Tom and Jerry they never get old. More modern? I LOVE Fairly Odd Parents

My favorite is Yosemite Sam. "I hate rabbits."

Facts about Sam:

The role of Yosemite Sam was originated by the Warners' principal voiceman, Mel Blanc. In his autobiography, Blanc said he had a difficult time coming up with the voice. He tried giving Sam a small voice, but didn't feel that it worked. One day, he decided to simply yell at the top of his lungs, which was inspired by a fit of road rage he had that day. It fit perfectly with the blustery character, but also took a toll on Mel. He always made it a point to record Sam's lines at the end of a recording session so he wouldn't have to play other characters with a hoarse voice. In his final years, it was simply too much, and he passed along the role of Sam (and of Foghorn Leghorn, whose voice is similar) to others (most notably Joe Alaskey in Who Framed Roger Rabbit while Blanc did most of the other Looney Tunes roles in that movie). This makes Sam one of the few voices created by Blanc to be voiced by someone else during his lifetime.

Blanc used a voice similar to Yosemite Sam's for Mr. Spacely on The Jetsons.

My favorite is Betty Boop. I loved her. A question: why do men think women in Target are looking for "god knows what?" We spend our time trying to find something for out guys. :-)

First of all, I know how much you despise shopping at Target...glad you survived the trip.

Secondly, Speedy Gonzalez was my favorite. I fancied myself to be pretty speedy, so I could identify with the little rodent.

Thirdly, I think you should pen a letter to those rescals at Warner Brothers and complain. I bet you could give them quite a tongue lashing through your writing...and they would definitely deserve it!

And 4th...glad to see you didn't follow through on your idea to not post anything for the entire month of September! I surley would have gone mad!

I bought the same collection for the same reasons and was disappointed a little myself. Ah, favorite character will always be Bugs Bunny.

I used to be able to do a passable Marvin the Martian.

But as for favorite cartoon character, I would have to break it down as follows.

1) Daffy Duck for vintage.
2) Ren & Stimpy for modern.
3) Bill the Cat for modern pop culture.

And finally:

4) Calvin of Calivn & Hobbes. I actually gave my son that middle name due to loving the comic strip.

I thinks youse and Yosemite Sam needs to ride down to that store and do some rootin' tootin' on their ass.

Hard to beat Bugs, but then there's the Coyote, and Sylvester, and...hard to pick.

Not a single cartoon has ever come within shooting range of Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. I want to own every single episode some day!

And they used REAL music!

In animation: Bugs Bunny.

In print: Snoopy and Woodstock.

That is a disappointment of epic proportion!! I am sorry.

But my favorite is undeniably Marvin the Martian!

I say, son, you have an award:

That is just wrong. You should write to Warner Bros, demand a refund, and that in exchange for NOT giving them bad press, they should give you every single episode of Foghorn Leghorn.

I love Daffy Duck - he's got such an attitude and he always gets the short end of the stick every single time. I think one of my all-time favorite cartoons is when Bugs Bunny is drawing Daffy and puts him into these hilarious situations.

Scotti Cohn said...

That really is just plain WRONG. I used to like Pepé as a kid but when I got older, he seemed really creepy, like a stalker. Speedy Gonzalez is alive and well in other forms (have you read the children's book Skippyjon Jones?) I still giggle uncontrollably at The Slobovian Rabbit (as played by Bugs Bunny).

Hey...I woulda been hotter than a hornet in a hat, son...no FJL? wtf?

Just ain't Amurrican, I'll tell you what..

My favorite cartoon was The Roadrunner...just loved the never say die attitude of old Wile E Coyote despite epic failure after epic failure.

Quick question though, If he could afford all of that ACME crap you'd think he could at least grab a SlimJim somewhere along the line...just sayin'

Peace - Rene

My favorite cartoon character is on the tip of my tongue and I SAY SON...It's just stuck there...I can't remember.

I do however Love the word, "COCKAMAMIE" "BAMBOOZLE" is another all time favorite. Neither one of these words is helping me remember...just sending me in a different direction all together!

I love Bugs Bunny!! Just hearing that opening tune takes me straight back to my youth!! (correction childhood!)

I don't think I could pick one, altho Marvin the Martian was always fun.

I miss cartoons.

Foghorn is my fave, too, followed closely by Pepe. I'd have been peeved, too!!

Randy's favorite is Roadrunner, but only the first few years....he sys they ruined them after that by making the Coyote's tricks illogical and impractical....Randy's not that good at cartoons really....sigh....

Hubby and I vote for Katie Kaboom, but that may have a lot to do with our current parenting situation. Also, I loved Penelope Pitstop. And Trixie from the Speed Racer cartoons was a fave too.

What a bummer, Travis. I would write to Warner Brothers and demand a refund for false advertising!

My favorites were Bullwinkle and Road Runner.

Sorry about the false advertising, Travis.

Bugs Bunny, hands down. You hear a certain piece of music and see guys in helicopters. I hear the same thing and start singing, "Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit!"

If I ever go to a store again, it will be Target. They gave me a credit card, see?

Ah, Looney Tunes... I agree, much better quality than cartoons today. Pepe and Speedy are probably my favorites, although nothing beats a good old "Rabbit season!" -"Duck season!" argument.

This post is awesome haha all the cock references too funny. Also my nephew had a birthday today and got this for his birthday. Who doesn't love Loony Tunes? I even watched Space Jam!

I have two all time favorite cartoon characters, Linus Van Pelt is #1 from Peanuts, who doesn't like the blanket carrying linus!?!? A close second though would be Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons gosh he makes me laugh.

Huskers looked good

oh donald duck would be right up there as well

Bugs Bunny and Wile E. Coyote!

What major suckage. :( They shouldn't put the characters on the cover if those characters aren't in the collection! [stabinates Warner]

Jim and I love cartoons too, especially the old classic Warners. We don't have any kids and don't care what anyone thinks when we buy cartoon DVDs or go out to see animated movies in theaters. If anyone thinks we're wierd because we enjoy cartoons as adults, they can just bite both of us.

I don't really have a favorite cartoon character, any more than I have a single favorite of anything else. I do like Foghorn Leghorn, but I think I like Bugs and Daffy's cartoons better -- the big classics like "What's Opera Doc?" and "Duck Amuck" and "Rabbit of Seville," and... what's the one with "Duck Season!" "Rabbit Season!" "Duck Season!" BLAM! LOL! That's great. :D

Did you watch any of the new generation Warners cartoons, though? Pinky and the Brain rocked, and Buttons and Mindy, and some of Yakko, Wakko and Dot's film parodies -- they did a great job with Beauty and the Beast, and Sound of Music. [snicker]

Well, that's stinks. My favorite character is Marvin the Martian. "Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom."

you get a lot of comments so perhaps someone noted this. I recall reading when this series came out Warner Bros basically put ONE really strong episode on the entire collection and then did that for another 2-3 DVD sets before people caught on. Its a shame. You can't even find bug bunny anymore..I'd love a real solid Ultimate Box set collection..I don't buy dvds often but that i would buy.

WordVixen said...

It's gotta be Yosemite Sam. Granted, he ain't much without Bugs, but he's BETTER than Bugs.

And I'm so with Angie. "oooooh Buuuuutttoooonss! Ok, Lady, I love you, buh-bye!" And then their's the Goodfeathers. Pinky and the Brain. And who could ever forget "Yur a good dog, Rita, a good dog.". Yeah, I have issues.

That IS false advertising. Shucks...I'm sorry for your disappointment! I always loved all three of those characters too! Speedy was a favorite, though. I also always liked Yosemite Sam and Marvin the Martian. For current stuff, I usually can't get enough of Spongebob. :-)

WHAT?! It's on the cover and not in the video?!

That sucks!

And that's no joke, son.

My favorite cartoon characters are probably Chip 'n Dale, although Foghorn Leghorn is in my top 10. I always thought that Roadrunner and Wylie Coyote were some of the funniest cartoons ever produced.
I cannot believe they put your favorites on the box and not IN the box! That's just wrong.

I'm with you on Foghorn Leghorn. If he ever decides to run for president, he has my vote!

I really liked Wile Coyote, that singing and dancing frog that was found in the building's cornerstone, Mighty Mouse, the Tasmanian Devil, Hewey, Dewey and Louie Duck (Donald's nephews), and Uncle Scrooge. I know that's more than one, but I couldn't choose.

I used to have a tape of all of my fave Looney Tunes. I can still recite some entirely from memory. Looney Tunes rocked--and NOT the "new" ones they made more recently (& might still make.) I don't know if I could pick one fave from the bunch, but Foghorn's always up near the top.
